The Sports Excellence program of the 1st Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), operating with the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), collaborated with the Beitostølen Healthsports Center in Norway to implement the “Adapted Physical Education Academy” (APEA) program.

The project was funded with €68,000 from the EEA Grants (European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021), reflecting the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway toward a greener, more competitive, and inclusive Europe.

APEAwas designed to provide students with disabilities access to tailored physical education and recreational activities, promoting inclusivity in sports. The program focused on training educational staff in the principles of adapted physical education, equipping them with the skills to create more opportunities for students with disabilities to engage in sports activities.

The program was delivered through a multi-day seminar, where special education teaching staff received training on modern practices in adapted physical education. It covered the essential knowledge and methodologies required for special education teachers to effectively address the unique needs of each student with disabilities.

The APEA program was implemented across eight regions in Greece, reaching a total of 192 participants, strengthening inclusive sports education nationwide.
